Wow, this is currently unbeatable - so long as you can put enough spending through your card. Remember, you can often spend more through your card than you need to just by rearranging how you pay for things you were already going to buy anyway.

So, you get a nice 2.5% cashback for your first 3 months with this card, before it drops down to a standard 1.25% cashback on everything after that.

This is actually a higher regular rate than has been available for many years now, with cards typically offering at best 1%, and frequently as low as 0.5%.

During the first 3 months there is a cap on the amount of spending you receive the bonus 2.5% rate for. This is limited to a maximum of £4,000 spend - but remember that this alone will put £100 back in your pocket if you maximise it.

There is however a £25 annual fee to take into consideration. This is an irritation, but just factor it in and you should still come out ahead of all other cards if you can put enough spending through with Amex.

The other element you need to factor in, is an anniversary bonus rate. If you can put £10,000 per year through this card you receive an unlimited 2.5% rate for a whole month after your anniversary date. Unlike the first 3 months, you can spend as much as you like in this month and receive 2.5% cashback on all of it.

So if you can plan and time your spending accordingly, the Amex Platinum card will still give you the best OVERALL cashback return you can get.

Even if you don't have big purchases planned, it's quite easy to divert things you would normally pay by debit card or cash onto your AMEX card instead. So you can get 1.25% cashback on everything from supermarket shopping to buying petrol.
